We are beyond words today at The Melanoma Coalition! We are thrilled to announce that we have received a gift pledge of $1.5 Million dollars from a private donor who wishes to remain anonymous!!
And, we are equally excited to announce that 100% of these funds will be used to support postdoctoral scholar fellowships and research led by Dr. Susana Ortiz over the next five years at UCSFs Melanoma Research Program!
Dr. Susana Ortiz-Urda, MD, PhD, MBA, co-director of the UCSF Melanoma Center, treats patients with early and advanced melanoma. Her lab has a broad expertise in human models of epithelial neoplasia and melanoma. She studies in depth cancer signaling to identify novel transcripts, their functions and the factors that promote resistance to drugs and/or cancer progression via transcriptome (RNA-Seq) to capture the implicated coding and non-coding elements in this process. These findings might serve as key biomarkers and/or new targets for therapeutics in melanoma.
The Melanoma Coalition’s mission is to eradicate this disease, which is today’s fastest growing cancer. It is this kind of research that has led to very significant progress towards this goal. But much work remains, and the Melanoma Coalition intends to be part of this work through ongoing funding of critical research and building awareness of the epidemic that melanoma has become.
